Approach
I believe effective therapy stems from a collaboration between counselor and client. I do not think it is my clinical role to offer advice as an expert on your life and instead view the client/ therapist relationship as one of equality. I believe you have the answers you seek inside of you; it is my job to help you uncover and embrace the solution to your problems. My approach is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Interpersonal Process approaches to counseling. I also integrate mindfulness-based approaches and coping strategies congruent with ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). The way I work with each client varies depending on the client’s goals, and on the individual’s identity and experiences. I strive to understand each client’s personality, individual and cultural identities, social context, and unique history as it relates to the work we do together. You will find me to be genuine, caring, and supportive.
Specialty
People often ask me, “What is your specialty?” I consider myself a general practitioner. I help adults and teenagers cope with and heal from issues affecting so many people today like depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting struggles, and trauma.
My experience and training have allowed me to develop a few areas of specialty with adolescents and young adults, including those struggling with anorexia using Family-Based Treatment (the Maudsley Method) and traumatized teens using Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Additionally, I have worked in a medical practice with an integrated gender care clinic, so I have had the privilege in helping transgender individuals in at various stages of transition.
Experience & Qualifications
I began practicing as an LCSW in North Carolina in 2006 and moved to Maine in 2019 where I have continued my practice. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. I gained clinical experience in the field through my employment at Spring Harbor Hospital in Maine, Jefferson Hills Center for Mental Health in Colorado, and Alexander Youth Network in North Carolina. I went on to graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and earned my Master of Social Work degree. I completed my clinical supervision as a provisionally licensed clinician at Daymark Recovery Services in Monroe, North Carolina. After licensure, I went on to practice psychotherapy at Daymark Recovery Services, became the Associate Clinical Director at the outpatient clinic, and later the Clinical Director at the Facility Based Crisis center. Before leaving North Carolina to move to Maine, I had the opportunity to continue my clinical practice at an excellent integrated medical practice. I completed my specialty training for anorexia treatment (FBT) at the Medical University of South Carolina and my TF-CBT training through Duke University.
